When The Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association (NAWA) was founded in 1958 by the pioneering humanist Padmashri Dr. S. Narasimhan, it aimed at addressing the challenges of rejuvenating a battered people and empowering them to take their destinies in their own lands.
Mary Martin dedicated much of her time to the Nilgiri Adivasi Welfare Association, based in the hill town of Kotagiri where she lived. NAWA’s programs include a range of development assistance, including hospital and medical services, education and training.
Mary also helped fund and create a clinic for indigenous children, pictured here in 2014 with the children and staff, and the Secretary of NAWA, M. Alwas (right) and Mary’s nephew Peter Martin (left).
